Inclusion, Mission &Vision
an unplugged island experience
Located on its own wooded island on Upper Saranac Lake in New York's Adirondack Mountains, Eagle Island is a youth camp, a National Historic Landmark, and one of the best-preserved examples of Adirondack Great Camp architecture.
MISSION
In everything we do, we inspire and empower girls and young women to be confident, collaborative, and courageous through unplugged Adirondack experiences.
VISION
Learn through Community Experience
Camp is a life-changing experience where campers embark on new adventures and challenges, and develop friendships and social connections. They will learn, grow, and build key skills to succeed in today’s world and into the future.
Nurture a Culture of Equity and Belonging
In all we do, we strive to create a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusivity – encouraging everyone to bring their whole selves to camp. Campers from diverse backgrounds can live authentically and feel connected and supported.
Preserve the Island’s Ecology and History
As a historic Adirondack Great Camp and National Historic Landmark uniquely situated on a private island, we serve as a tangible connection to our past and the region. We provide an environmentally responsible camp experience that preserves and honors the original ancestral land of the Haudenosaunee people.
INCLUSION STATEMENT
We believe that camp is a life-changing experience that should be accessible to all regardless of ability to pay, and we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all we do. We are intent on continuing our organization’s deliberate focus on DEI and belonging, as we learn and grow.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We acknowledge that Eagle Island is located in upstate New York on the ancestral lands and original territory of the Haudenosaunee people.
The original people of this place have deep knowledge of the land gained over thousands of years of observation. At Eagle Island Camp, we believe the wisdom of the Haudenosaunee people, along with their gratitude for all parts of the natural world, can guide a better co-existence of human and nature. As such, we aim to provide an environmentally responsible experience and inspire and empower all to be confident, collaborative, and courageous leaders in these efforts.
We at Eagle Island, are committed to continuing to learn and grow, and as such this recognition is a framework that will develop over time.
