    3: July 28-August 9, Skippers, Boathouse

    $2,915

The goal of Eagle Island's Skippers program is to grow and retain a new generation of sailors through enhanced skill development and a positive, healthy sport experience. Our program connects campers to instruction and resources that help all types of youth sailors enjoy the sport, improve their skills, and become sailors for life.

This program will introduce campers to basic sailing concepts and boat handling. Courses include both on-the-water instruction as well as off-the-water activities. They'll learn skills like rigging, hoisting, trimming, steering, tacking, jibing, and much, much more! Campers will learn self-confidence, teamwork, and camaraderie. Our overall goal is simple - teach girls how to sail and encourage them to have fun on the water. Enjoy this classic water sport at any level; if you put your mind and effort into it, you can become a skipper, too!

Activities

In everything we do, we believe in inspiring and empowering girls and young women to be confident, collaborative, and courageous. Eagle Island’s programming is designed to make optimal use of our exceptional, natural location. We are situated in the heart of the Adirondacks on the Upper Saranac Lake, an eight-mile pristine lake, amid dense forest, and a short boat ride away from the mainland. Water and wilderness activities form the foundation of our programming and are supplemented by a wide variety of staff- and camper-led programming across arts and crafts, sports, music and drama, nature, creative pursuits, and team-building.

Girls Overnight camp Adirondacks Kayaking

Boating

Our fleet of boats includes kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and CORCLs (small boats designed specifically for kids that are smaller and lighter than canoes or kayaks and easier to maneuver). Boating activities include direct instruction – e.g., how to safely launch, steer, and dock each type of boat, as well as trips of varying lengths and difficulties, and free time to explore and practice skills in the boats.

Girls Overnight camp Adirondacks Sailing

Sailing

We have six Mercuries, 15-foot, sloop-rigged, centerboard sailboats that are well suited to learning to sail given their stability, sturdiness, size, and handling abilities. Mercuries are designed for various skill levels.

Girls Overnight camp Adirondacks Swimming

Swimming

Campers participate in daily swim instruction that ranges from the building blocks of how to swim up through the intricacies of sophisticated strokes. Campers also have many opportunities for free swim including camp-wide water carnivals and swimming games and races.

Girls Overnight camp Adirondacks Nature Mountains

Nature Education

We offer a number of nature-based activities with the goal of learning to become good stewards of the island, the Adirondacks, and our planet. Activities include learning about local plants, trees, and animals as well as conservation efforts and the principles of Leave No Trace.

Camper Choice Activities

Known as CHAOS (Counselors Have Another Outstanding Skill) allows counselors to lead activities like Spanish, drumming, learning about bugs found on the island, puzzles, knitting, group games, cloud watching, kite creation, singing, dancing, and more!

Girls Overnight camp Adirondacks Sports Activities

Camper-Led Play

We put the campers in the driver's seat of their own adventures! Instead of counselors or adults always deciding what games to play or what activities to do, we give campers the freedom to choose and lead the way. Campers get to express their interests, make new friends, and learn to be leaders themselves, all while having a blast.

Teambuilding

Teambuilding at summer camp is a vital component of creating a positive and inclusive camp experience.

Campers learn how to communicate, support, and trust each other so that together, they can conquer challenges, solve exciting puzzles, and make unforgettable memories.

*To safely participate in sailing, campers must pass a deep water swim assessment. This will at a minimum include:

–A feet-first entry into water over the camper’s head
–Treading water for at least 1 minute
–Maintain position on the back for at least 1 minute
–Swim 40 yards continuously using any stroke or combination of strokes (not including doggy paddling)
–Rotate 360 degrees in the water and orient to the exit
–Exit the water onto the dock without assistance

Our Beliefs

Eagle Island is an entirely “unplugged” experience; technology is not part of camp and many campers stay in platform tents without any electricity. Day-to-day life at camp is, by design, a slower one than home and school. Our focus is on creating a camp environment that is unhurried, camper-led, inclusive, and attuned to nature.

Campers’ days are full of rich programming, but there is also dedicated slow-down time for a game of cards in your tent, working on an arts and crafts project on a deck overlooking the lake, a leisurely walk along a lakeside path to the waterfront, solo reading and letter-writing, spontaneous games of tag, intricate puzzles inside our historic buildings, and loud, silly singing while waiting for meals to start. We see these in-between moments as equally important to our formal programming.
