Eagle Island closing took place Friday, November 6, 2015 and was attended by Friends of Eagle Island Board of Directors Henry D. (“Buz”) Graves Jr., a great-grandson of the original donor of Eagle Island to the Girl Scouts, and Carol Jackman, former Eagle Island counselor and resident of Upper Saranac Lake.
Cheers could be heard coast to coast. Of course, we know that if it were not for the generosity of our Donor and the tireless efforts of our attorney, Bob Goodsell, and his firm, Post, Polak, Goodsell, MacNeill, & Strauchler, P.A., we would not be celebrating.
We want to thank those Friends of Eagle Island supporters who so quickly and so generously contributed to FEI in anticipation of this day. We are overwhelmed with appreciation and the level of trust and faith you have demonstrated with these donations.
THE GOOD NEWS CONTINUES….
A second anonymous donor has informed us that they are offering an unrestricted Matching Gift up to $100,000. You do not want to miss being a part of this extraordinary opportunity to restore, preserve and reopen Eagle Island where children may always play! If you donate now, every $1 you give becomes $2 for Eagle Island! Help us meet this challenge and raise a total of $200,000 by December 31, 2015.
Your donation will be used in the following ways: Restoration; Repairs to water, sewer, electrical and roofs; Transaction Fees, Start-up costs; and Program equipment.
It’s not a surprise that the property has been neglected over the last seven years and it requires some immediate attention. We have already had an engineer and historic preservationist visit the island to evaluate some of the more pressing needs. The historic wooden water tank has collapsed and the water distribution is in very poor shape and likely needs to be entirely replaced. The septic system needs new pumps, collection and pipes. The service docks have suffered water damage. Finally, the electrical system must be upgraded and several buildings need new roofs. While the majority of the buildings are structurally sound, they require a variety of repairs.
Friends of Eagle Island is confident that with the support of its followers and the generosity of others these challenges can be met.
The sooner we can get started, the faster we can have visitors and campers back on the Island!
